Why you're hearing this so early

We're getting married on a mountain in Austria, and we'd love you to be there. That takes more planning than the usual Saturday, so here's everything we know a year out.

Nothing needs deciding yet. Formal invitations and RSVPs will follow in spring 2027. For now, block out the weekend of 17 to 19 September 2027, since most people will want the Friday and Sunday too, and hold off on booking flights until we confirm the timings.

The place

Berggasthaus Höllensteinhütte

A family-run mountain inn on the Loschboden, a high plateau above the Tux valley at the far end of the Zillertal. It sits at 1,740 metres, looks straight across at the Tuxer Alps, and is run by the Erler family, who will be feeding us.

It is a genuine alm: timber, low ceilings, a wood-panelled dining room, rather than a hotel dressed up as one. That's precisely why we chose it.

Getting to the valley

Flights and trains

Tux sits at the head of the Zillertal, about ninety minutes east of Innsbruck. Four airports work. Most people will probably head for Salzburg, but they're worth comparing before you book.

  • Salzburg (SZG)

    ≈ 2 h 15 by road

    Where most of you will probably land. It's a small, calm airport that you're through in minutes, with direct flights from London through September and a straightforward drive west along the motorway to the Zillertal.

  • Innsbruck (INN)

    ≈ 1 h 15 by road

    Much the closest, and by far the shortest onward journey of any option. Gatwick and Manchester both fly here through the summer. Innsbruck is busiest in the ski season, so there are more routes and more frequent flights in winter than in September, but there is usually something that works. Worth checking alongside Salzburg.

  • Munich (MUC)

    ≈ 2 h 15 by road Oktoberfest

    The widest choice of flights all year, but Oktoberfest 2027 opens in Munich on the same Saturday we're getting married. Expect expensive flights, very full hotels and busy trains south. Fine if you fly in and leave the city straight away, but otherwise best avoided.

  • Vienna (VIE)

    ≈ 5 h onward

    The best-connected airport in Austria and often the cheapest to reach, but it's at the wrong end of the country. Fast Railjet trains run west to Jenbach in about four hours. Worth it if you're connecting from further afield, or if you fancy a couple of days in Vienna either side.

  • By rail

    Jenbach → Mayrhofen → Tux

    The last leg is the same from anywhere, and it's straightforward without a car. Mainline train to Jenbach, the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn up the valley to Mayrhofen, then the local bus to Tux. Slow, scenic and entirely doable with luggage.

Where to stay

The valley, not the hut

The Höllensteinhütte has only a handful of rooms, which will be taken by our immediate families and the wedding party. Everyone else stays down in the valley, in Tux.

Tux is a string of small villages along one road: Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns, Madseit and Hintertux, all within a few minutes of each other and all fine bases. Lanersbach is the most convenient, as it's where the road up to the hut begins.

Guesthouses and small hotels in Tux fill up for the autumn, so book once we've confirmed the timings. We'll add specific suggestions here nearer the time.

The last 3.5 kilometres

Getting up to the hut

The hut is reached by a private gravel road climbing from Lanersbach. Please don't drive yourself. It's narrow, unlit, and you'll want a drink.

Local taxis run the route all evening. We'll organise the bookings; you just need to know roughly what it costs and that there's no walking involved unless you want there to be.

Fare is €7 per person each way. We'll organise the bookings and send times with the invitation, so you just need to be outside your guesthouse.

Gifts

You're travelling to a mountain in Austria for us. That's the gift. If you'd still like to do something, we'll say more closer to the time.

Language

Tux is German-speaking, but everyone in tourism speaks English. You won't struggle.

Making a week of it

The Zillertal is superb walking country in September, and the Hintertux glacier is open year-round. Plenty of people will stay on, so do join them.

One small thing

Already know you can't make it?

There's nothing to reply to yet. Invitations and the full RSVP will follow in spring 2027.

But if you already know the date won't work, telling us now genuinely helps. It's a long way to come and we have more people we'd love to invite than the hut will hold, so an early no lets us ask someone else in good time. No explanation needed.
